Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Cynodon Dactylon Aqueous and Aqua Alcoholic Extract

Author: NEHA. N, S RAJESHKUMAR, V.B PREEJITHA
Abstract: Introduction: Cynodon dactylon (Bermuda grass) is a grass that originated in Africa. It is a member of the family Poaceae. It is a perennial plant widely used as a valuable source of medicine from traditions. It was traditionally known as durva and was used as a folk remedy for anasarca, cancer, convulsions, epilepsy, hypertension, bronchitis, cough, and diarrhoea. The extracts of this plant have a wide range of applications and have shown promising results in the field of medicine. This study evaluates the anti-inflammatory activity of the aqueous and aqua alcoholic extracts Cynodon dactylon. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the aqueous and aqua alcoholic extracts of Cynodon dactylon. Materials and methods: The aqueous and aqua alcoholic extracts were prepared by dissolving the dried form of plant with 100 ml distilled water, distilled water + ethanol (in equal concentrations) respectively. The anti-inflammatory activity of these extracts in different concentrations of 10-50 µl was evaluated using Inhibition of albumin denaturation assay. BSA was used as a reagent for the assay. The same procedure was carried out to check the anti-inflammatory activity of the standard, Diclofenac sodium in different concentrations. Result: From the % of inhibition of the extracts obtained, it was found that both the extracts showed good anti-inflammatory activity in relation to the standard Diclofenac sodium. In comparison, the aqua alcoholic extract showed better anti-inflammatory activity than aqueous extract. Conclusion: From the above study, it is evident that both aqueous and aqua alcoholic extracts of C. dactylon possess good anti-inflammatory activity. In addition to the pre-existing medicinal values of this plant, it can be concluded that C. dactylon reveals itself as a promising drug in herbal medicine.
